What's New at NetWellness – June 2006

June's Feature: Home Safety Month

According to the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), unintentional injuries are a leading cause of death for Americans of all ages, regardless of gender, race, or economic status. Many more of us sustain nonfatal unintentional injuries (more than 27 million people in 2003).The physical and emotional effects of these injuries can be extensive and sometimes life-changing. Visit our homepage feature this month and join NetWellness and the Home Safety Council in recognizing June as Home Safety Month. You'll find lots of ideas for reducing injuries and making your home a safer place.

Department of the Month: Community Dentistry

The featured department for this month is the Department of Community Dentistry at the School of Dental Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Experts from Community Dentistry answer user questions and write original content for NetWellness health topic Preventive Dentistry.

The Department of Community Dentistry is the link between the School of Dental Medicine and the Cleveland Community. The department has several programs which involve health services, education, and research and are a resource for graduate students studying dental care systems. These programs have as their goal the protection and improvement of the oral health of individual patients and of the community at large. Faculty members of the department have research programs of their own and teach and serve on committees of graduate students from various departments of the University (Community Health Nursing, Epidemiology, Nutrition).

One of the major undertakings which the Department of Community Dentistry also has underway is an ongoing program involving all four years of dental students in the placement of dental sealants on all 2nd and 6th graders permanent molar teeth who attend the City of Cleveland Public Schools. This program involves referrals to dentists for additional care, education of teachers, public school students, parents, and dental students.

The School of Dental Medicine also provides a wide ranging clinical service program housed within the School. (It maintains its own "dental hospital"). This program provides service to 55,000 patients a year and includes all of the dental specialties. It provides a laboratory for study of all of the management issues that typify an ambulatory setting.

Current NetWellness experts from the Department of Community Dentistry include: James Lalumandier, DDS, MPH, Stephen Wotman, DDS, Suchitra Nelson, PhD, Kristin Victoroff, DDS, Kristin Williams, DDS, MPH, James Houston, DDS, and Catherine Demko, PhD.
