Nodule on lung

07/14/2008 11:19AM

Question:

My mother-in-law is a smoker and smokes a lot. She was just told that she has a nodule on her lung. She has been coughing up blood for about a month now. Could it be cancer? They are sending her for a PET scan.

Answer:

This could be lung cancer, although infectious causes are also possible (pneumonia). A PET scan is reasonable. She should consider consultation with a lung cancer specialist—a thoracic surgeon, a pulmonologist, or an oncologist.
