Mild incontinence- help!

02/23/2010

Question:

I`m 34 years old and had a hemorroidectomy over a year ago. Six weeks following the hemorroidectomy I had an anal abcess removed as a result from an infection. I started noticing shortly after the surgeries that every day I have a BM I experience mild leakage throughout the day. It does not go on my underwear (Thank GOD) but it is very bothersome and irritating....emotionally I am deeply saddend by this issue. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from getting worse. I don`t drink coffee or soda and I eat a high fiber diet to help but to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Answer:

You can protect the skin with a barrier ointment- this will decrease irritation, itching, and burning. If you are leaking as a result of the surgeries near your anal sphincter, your control may not improve with time. Physical therapy specifically aimed at strengthening the pelvic floor may be of benefit.
